TUSTIN : School Official Gives Advice on Prop. 187
School district Supt. David Andrews has asked parents worried about passage of Prop. 187 to do nothing drastic and keep their children in school.
In a letter sent to parents earlier this week, Andrews said that it might take months or years before the courts resolve legal challenges to the measure, which was approved in the Nov. 8 election.
He said the California School Boards Assn. was among several groups that have filed suits contesting the constitutionality of the provision that would deny public education to children of illegal immigrants.
A San Francisco Superior Court judge has issued a temporary restraining order against the implementation of the education ban pending further hearings.
“I feel that Proposition 187 will be found unconstitutional in a number of areas, and, therefore, you must allow the courts to determine what parts are legal and what are not,” Andrews wrote. He urged parents to call the principal of their children’s school before making a decision.
“Do not do something drastic by taking your children out of school until we all know what the courts decide,” he said.
