Former Rep. Joe Kolter was released without bail Friday after pleading not guilty to embezzlement and other charges stemming from a federal investigation of the House post office.

Prosecutors have charged the Pennsylvania Democrat with embezzling more than $40,000 from taxpayers in cash, disguised as stamp purchases, and in watches, china and other personal items from a congressional stationery store. He was defeated in a 1992 primary after serving five terms.
