‘Confidentially Yours’

Director Francois Truffaut, who died 10 years ago, ended his all-too-brief yet major career with perhaps his most playful film ever. This is a giddy comedie noir in which a businessman (Jean-Claude Trintignant) is forced to turn to the secretary (Fanny Ardant) he has just fired after his wife ends up shot to death in her living room. Ardant is the classic wisecracking Girl Friday who, as a private eye, proves more intrepid than Nancy Drew ever dreamed of being. Adapted from Charles Williams’ “The Long Good Night,” this 1983 French production displays such a mastery of tone that every murder becomes a laughing matter (Bravo Saturday at 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Sunday).
