USAir Names Safety Chief: USAir Group Inc., reacting to growing criticism of its safety record, named retired Air Force Gen. Robert C. Oaks, 58, to the new position of vice president for corporate safety and regulatory compliance. In his new post, which will begin Dec. 1, Oaks will oversee all flying and ground safety activities at USAir, including aircraft maintenance and pilot training. USAir also hired PRC Aviation of Tucson to examine all USAir flight operations and safety policies and practices. The move comes in the wake of a Sept. 8 crash near Pittsburgh that killed 132 people.
