SANTA FE SPRINGS : Plan to Clean Up Chemical Company Site Unveiled
State and federal environmental officials have unveiled a plan for cleaning up contaminated soil and ground water at a Santa Fe Springs chemical company.
The California Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are proposing that Phibro-Tech Inc. pump and treat ground water to remove contaminants, including cadmium, chromium and trichloroethane.
The agencies propose that Phibro-Tech investigate and, if necessary, clean up volatile contaminants in the soil. The plan also calls for monitoring soil and ground water, covering any unpaved portions of the site to prevent contact with contaminated soil, repairing the site cover, constructing a berm around the perimeter of the facility and restricting property use to prevent any school or residential developments.
The public may comment on the proposed cleanup plan by submitting written comments by Dec. 30 to Cal-EPA, or by attending a Dec. 13 community meeting. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the Los Nietos Community and Senior Citizens Services in Whittier.
Phibro-Tech, a division of CP Chemicals Inc. of New Jersey, is in an industrial area at 8851 Dice Road in Santa Fe Springs.
The company produces a variety of inorganic chemicals used in the aerospace and electronics industries and also stores and treats off-site generated hazardous waste from those facilities.
