WHITTIER : Faculty Home Renamed After Garrett Family

Share

Whittier College officials renamed a campus faculty home after the parents of a trustee who pledged a $1 million endowment to the school.

In a ceremony, the two-story Spanish-style home was named Garrett House after Orval and Mary Garrett , parents of trustee Roberta Garrett Veloz. The home, formerly known as Stauffer House, is next to Stauffer residence hall.

“I believe in education and Whittier College is where I’m putting my money,” said Veloz. “One of my dreams was to go there and get a college degree. My parents, through their love and encouragement, helped me get that degree.”

Veloz, 58, is the president of the Valencia-based Aquafine Corp., which manufactures equipment for commercial water purification. She graduated from the college in 1957 with a degree in biology. Her parents owned an auto repair shop in Whittier and lived in the city from 1944-77.

The college hopes to use interest from the endowment to pay expenses for visiting government officials, artists and professors to stay at Garrett House and speak with students in the house and on campus.
