WHITTIER : $750 Scholarships Offered to Students

Share

Local high school and college students can earn a $750 scholarship by working at city businesses or at municipal offices under a new program called Whittier Works.

The City Council agreed recently to provide $25,000 to fund about 30 scholarships to students who work at least 160 hours.

Sal Failla, city community services director, said students will work in a city department or local business that matches their interests. Students will also receive coaching on how to handle a job interview and how to prepare a resume.

In choosing students, officials will consider teacher recommendations, but will not necessarily select those with the highest grades. City officials are encouraging applications from students in trade and vocational schools as well as those studying at junior colleges and universities.

Only Whittier residents are eligible. Forms are available at Whittier High School and at City Hall. For information: (310) 945-8210.
