For Second Chances
I can understand the frustration and fear that the teachers are feeling about students carrying weapons on campus in Moorpark.
Having taught school for 25 years for the Los Angeles Unified School District, I did not experience the violent encounters they have had. I retired in 1985, having taught in Woodland Hills among, for the most part, well-mannered pupils.
I believe everyone, especially youngsters, should be given a second chance. I am not condoning their carrying a weapon on campus, but I feel that expulsion is too drastic.
Instead, I would strongly recommend a one-year suspension, with the understanding that the youngster stay out of trouble during that time and then be reinstated in school.
I believe giving the child a second chance would give him (or her) time to contemplate and feel the loss of not being with his friends.
