GLENDALE : Council Race Starts With Mayor Entry
Glendale Mayor Eileen Givens this week became the first candidate to officially enter the fray for next April’s City Council elections.
Givens, who was first elected to the council in 1991, said she is seeking a second four-year term to complete several goals.
“The city is going through a lot of changes at this time, and I think I have the experience and proven leadership that’s needed,” Givens said.
During her first council term, Givens helped create the City Hall in Your Neighborhood program, a series of town hall meetings where council and other city officials meet with residents.
During her tenure as mayor, which expires in April, the city’s Greater Downtown Strategic Plan was completed and the council decided to begin having its weekly meetings televised.
The other council seat on the ballot is currently held by three-term Councilman Larry Zarian, who was first elected in 1983. Zarian said Wednesday he will announce within a week whether or not he will seek a fourth term.
To run for public office, candidates must pick up nomination papers from the city clerk on or after Dec. 12, collect the signatures of 500 registered voters and turn them in with a $25 fee by Jan. 6.
