Valley Needs More Police on the Street

Share

I wholeheartedly agree with Don Schultz who says the residents of the San Fernando Valley need to support Councilman Richard Alarcon’s motion to create a sixth police division in the Valley. (“Crime Bill Funds Should Help 6th LAPD Division,” Nov. 20). Unfortunately, it is a well-known fact that there have not been enough police out there doing their job, and the residents and businesses in the San Fernando Valley are suffering as a result.

On the other hand, I totally disagree with Leon Furgatch’s Valley Commentary of Nov. 20, which objects to Mayor Richard Riordan’s use of Department of Water and Power funds to expand the Police Department.

As at least a partial result of the DWP’s having repeatedly gouged the residents of the San Fernando Valley, the DWP is one of the few agencies that even has any surplus assets! Clearly, these monies must go toward strengthening the Police Department and helping to ensure safer streets in our city so that our families and loved ones may survive to enjoy the benefits and services provided by the DWP!
