Policy Should Be to Put People First

Share

A friend recently told me she didn’t care if there’s a heaven, but she dearly hopes there is a hell.

After reading about children in Orange County going hungry as a matter of public policy, I have to agree with her.

Policy-makers who deprive children of food, health and education in order to teach their parents “responsibility” deserve the hottest seats. And the rest of us who let them get away with it in our names risk the same.

* God forbid that Linda Clark, quoted in “Residents Want Costa Mesa to Oust 3 Charities,” (Nov. 22) ever finds herself hungry, poor or homeless. If she does, I hope there will be a soup kitchen, a shelter and a clinic to help her.

* God save us from those conservative “Christians” who now refuse to serve breakfast in the schools, saying that it is anti-family and the responsibility of the parents. Didn’t they ever read the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25, where we are to feed the hungry?

Are these the same people who espouse “family values” and voted for Proposition 187, which will divide families who have a mixture of documented and undocumented persons? Are these the mean-spirited people who blame children for the economic woes of California?

A true Christian is a person who treats “others” as he or she wishes to be treated, not one who creates divisions among people.
