NBA ROUNDUP : Records Fall as Cavaliers Down Warriors

Mark Price scored a season-high 31 points and made five of Cleveland’s team-record 11 three-pointers as the Cavaliers defeated the Golden State Warriors, 101-87, Saturday night in Cleveland.

The Cavaliers set an NBA record by attempting only two free throws in the game, lowering the mark of three set by the Lakers against San Diego in 1980. Cleveland made both tries--one by John Williams, the other by Tony Campbell--completing a pair of three-point plays in the second quarter.

Price made 13 of his 16 shots from the field, including five of seven from the three-point arc, and adding 10 assists. Danny Ferry scored 16 points, including 12 on four of five shooting from long range. Chris Mills had the other two three-pointers for the Cavaliers, who broke the team record of 10 achieved five times previously.

The Warriors have lost the first three games of the four-game trip that concludes today at Detroit. They’ve been held to less than 100 points in all three games.

Chris Gatling led the Warriors with 13 points. Tim Hardaway and Latrell Sprewell scored 11 each.

Phoenix 111, San Antonio 108--Charles Barkley, activated off the injured list only hours before the game, scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the Suns outlasted the Spurs in Phoenix.

Barkley fouled out with 6.3 seconds left in his first game this season, and Sean Elliott of the Spurs made both free throws, cutting the Phoenix lead to 109-108.

But the Suns worked the ball to Danny Manning, who scored his 31st and 32nd points of the night to clinch the victory, the sixth without a loss at home for the Suns.

Dan Majerle scored 21 points and A.C. Green 17 for the Suns. David Robinson had 19 of his 25 points in the second half for the Spurs.

Dallas 124, Denver 123, OT--Jim Jackson scored a career-high 50 points, including two free throws with 0.5 seconds left in overtime, and the Mavericks rallied from a 25-point first-half deficit to beat the Nuggets in Denver.

Jackson had 39 of his points in the second half--15 of them in the third quarter as the Mavericks clawed back to within five points, 16 more in the fourth period and, finally, eight in overtime.

Jamal Mashburn scored 35 points for Dallas. Rodney Rogers led Denver with 25.

Boston 108, Philadelphia 99--Rookie Eric Montross made two free throws with 1:53 to play and David Wesley made a three-pointer 21 seconds later as the Celtics defeated the 76ers in Philadelphia.

Dee Brown scored 22 points, Dino Radja had 19 and Montross finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds--both season highs--for the Celtics, who were playing their fourth game in five nights.

Jeff Malone had 28 points and Dana Barros 23 for Philadelphia.

Seattle 98, Houston 94--Gary Payton’s jumper with 11.6 seconds to play broke a Rocket comeback and lifted the Supersonics over the defending champions in Houston.

It was Houston’s third consecutive loss after opening the season with nine victories.

Payton’s shot came after the Rockets, who trailed most of the second half and by as many as nine points, had pulled to 94-92 on a dunk by Robert Horry with 35 seconds to go. After Payton’s jumper, Detlef Schrempf added a pair of free throws for the Supersonics with 2.9 seconds remaining.

Vernon Maxwell led the Rockets with 23 and Hakeem Olajuwon had 22. Houston, though, had a horrible three-point shooting night, making five of 26.

The Rockets didn’t lose their third game last season until Christmas Day.

Orlando 113, Milwaukee 105--Anfernee Hardaway scored 21 of his 35 points in the first half and had his first triple double of the season to lead the Magic to its seventh consecutive victory, over the Bucks in Milwaukee.

The victory tied a team record for consecutive victories for the Magic (9-2) set Feb. 9-27 last season.

Hardaway, who scored a career-high 35 points in Friday’s victory over Boston, also had 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Shaquille O’Neal scored 21 points for the Magic, who led from the start. Todd Day had 26 points and Glenn Robinson 25 for the Bucks.

Charlotte 105, New York 95--Alonzo Mourning scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 18 rebounds as the Hornets sent the Knicks to their first home loss of the season.

The Knicks had won their first four games at Madison Square Garden.

Patrick Ewing of the Knicks was held to 11 points after the opening quarter, in which he scored 11 points to get New York off to a 13-point lead.
