NCAA SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIPS : UCLA, Cal State Fullerton Face Second-Round Games

UCLA will play Southern Methodist at SMU and Cal State Fullerton will play San Francisco at Fullerton today in the second round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament.

UCLA (16-4), ranked seventh, is led by Ante Razov, who has 13 goals and five assists for 31 points. Razov scored the winning goal with 4:24 to play in overtime to give UCLA a 3-2 first-round victory over unranked Alabama Birmingham last Sunday. The Bruins’ first playoff victory since 1991 ended a three-game losing streak.

UCLA played SMU in a regular-season game last year and forward Robbie LaBelle scored three goals to lead the Bruins to a 4-0 victory at Dallas.

SMU (15-3-1), ranked eighth, is led by Stefan Soufiane, who has 17 goals and five assists. SMU defeated 15th-ranked Wisconsin last Sunday, 2-1.

Fullerton (13-6-2), ranked 24th, is led by Eddie Soto, who has 18 goals and five assists. Soto scored two goals to lead Fullerton to a 3-1 overtime victory over 20th-ranked San Diego in a first-round game Nov. 19.

Fullerton defeated San Francisco, 1-0, last season in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Unranked San Francisco (10-6-3) defeated third-ranked Fresno State (17-3-1) on penalty kicks, 4-2, in a first-round game after the teams were tied, 1-1, after sudden-death overtime. Today’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
