COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Minnesota Keeps Its Guards Up and Defeats BYU, 79-74
Once again, Minnesota guards Voshon Lenard and Townsend Orr were the difference as the Golden Gophers turned in another strong performance against one of nation’s best teams at the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage.
Lenard made nine of 10 free throws down the stretch and finished with 24 points as Minnesota defeated Brigham Young, 79-74, late Saturday night to win the tournament.
Orr had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Gophers (3-0). He was named the tournament’s outstanding player, with averages of 16 points and seven rebounds. Lenard averaged 20 points and six rebounds.
The unranked Golden Gophers upset No. 5 Arizona, 72-70, in the first round, then beat No. 21 Villanova, 85-64.
OTHER GAMES
Cuonzo Martin made two free throws with eight seconds left in overtime to give Purdue an 88-87 victory over Iowa State and the championship of the Big Island Invitational at Hilo, Hawaii. The Boilermakers were trailing, 85-83, with 1:12 to play in overtime when Martin made a three-point shot. Fred Hoiberg then scored with 32 seconds left to put the Cyclones ahead. . . . St. Louis made only one basket in the final 10:00, but made 14 of 17 free throws during that span to beat Bradley, 66-59, in its home opener at the new Kiel Center.
