Four inmates at maximum-security Calipatria State Prison were wounded Monday by guards who opened fire to break up a fight between black and Latino prisoners, officials said.

The fight started at 8:10 a.m. in a yard called the Delta Facility, said Calipatria State Prison spokesman Lt. F. T. Deschler.

Four inmates were stabbed before the fight, he said. At least 15 inmates in the Imperial County facility were involved in the melee. When they ignored warnings to stop, correctional officers fired warning shots, Deschler said.

Some of the wounded were treated at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley, an emergency room supervisor said.
