SAN CLEMENTE

2 Students Assist at Doheny Center

Who: Katie Gililland and Lisette Polny

Contribution: The two San Clemente High School students volunteered 95 hours this past summer at the Doheny State Beach Interpretive Center. The center displays more than 100 marine animal species in several aquariums. In the summer, the center depends on a volunteer staff, mostly students, to remain open to the public. Gililland and Polny served as guides and cashiers, and did cleanup work at the center. Both students received a letter of thanks from the center.

2 Groups Get Funds for Needy Youths

Who: Two programs providing sports opportunities for low-income youngsters

Contribution: The Girls and Boys Club of Fountain Valley-Huntington Beach and Students Run LA are among 11 Southland groups that will share in a $382,048 grant from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles.

The Girls and Boys Club, also known as Kid Connection, was awarded an $8,800 grant, which will be spent to resurface and restripe the club’s play area.

Students Run LA, a running program serving at-risk youngsters in Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego counties, was awarded $50,400, which will be used to teach the value of goal setting and teamwork through long-distance running.

Libraries Receive Donated Furnishings

Who: Rockwell International Corp. in Anaheim and the Coast Community College District in Costa Mesa

Contribution: Donated furniture for the Huntington Beach Central Library and Oak View Branch Library. Rockwell donated 50 metal shelving units to be used in the central library’s genealogy section.

The company also gave 70 wooden shelving units, a desk, file cabinet and table for the Oak View branch, scheduled to open in the spring. The college district donated five tables, a desk and a file cabinet, also to be used at the Oak View branch.

Items still needed for Oak View include stackable study chairs, computer equipment, adult study chairs and children’s furnishings. For donation information, call (714) 960-8837.

IRVINE

Cancer Society Seeks a Variety of Helpers

The Irvine branch of the American Cancer Society needs volunteers to help with office duties, including answering telephone calls. Volunteers are also needed to provide patient transportation and may also work at health fairs and in fund raising. For information, call Sally Carson at (714) 751-0441.
