Share

For the fifth year running, West High School of Torrance has won the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon.

The nine-member team of three A students, three B students and three C students beat out Diamond Bar High School, which came in second, and Peninsula High School, which placed third.

At the state decathlon in March, West will face about 45 other high schools, including Marshall High School, winner of the Los Angeles Unified School District Decathlon. Los Angeles Unified holds its own decathlon and does not participate in the county competition.

In state competition, West has placed second and third in recent years. The secrets to West’s repeat victories, its coach and team members say, are its high level of motivation and plain hard work.

The academic decathlon consists of 10 events, including six written exams on subjects such as music and art, literature, science, mathematics and economics, speech and essay contests, an interview and a Super Quiz finale.
