Miguel A. Pulido Jr. became mayor Tuesday night during a swearing-in ceremony marked by standing ovations and mariachi music.

Before a crowd of more than 250 people jammed into the City Council chambers, Pulido and council members Patricia McGuigan, Robert L. Richardson and Tony Espinoza took their oaths of office.

Political leaders including Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez attended the ceremony, as did Rancho Santiago Community College District Chancellor Vivian Blevins and several members of the board of trustees.

During the ceremony, the City Council certified the recent election and turned over the mayoralty to Pulido, who becomes the city’s first Latino mayor.

Former Mayor Daniel H. Young received a standing ovation for his service to the city. He had been mayor since 1986 and was a council member for three years before becoming mayor.

He thanked residents for letting him lead the city. “I hope I have been able to serve you well and serve you proud,” he said.

After being sworn in, Pulido told the audience that now is the time “to dream about the future, to dream about the things we can do” for the city.
