Maybe It’s the Long Lines: When it comes to dealing with the public, grocery checkout clerks were rated the least helpful or friendly, according to a survey of 1,312 consumers by marketing consultant Wunderman Cato Johnson, part of the advertising agency Young & Rubicam. Airline check-in employees were the second-most annoying, flight attendants were third and airline phone personnel were fifth. The No. 4 spot went to hotel check-in clerks. Department store salespeople ranked sixth on the list of least effective, bank officers ranked seventh, bank tellers eighth, cable TV phone personnel ninth and rental car phone personnel 10th. The employees rated most helpful and friendly included credit card phone representatives, at No. 1, followed by rental car desk clerks and long-distance phone personnel.
