SIMI VALLEY : 9th-Grader’s Art Is Science Fair Poster

Share

Using a felt-tipped pen and a computerized drawing, Simi Valley ninth-grader Alexandra Ianculescu created a star-patterned sketch that was selected this week as the 1995 Ventura County Science Fair poster.

“This is the first time I’ve won an award for art,” the 14-year-old La Reina High School student said. “At first I didn’t believe it.”

Alexandra’s drawing, which started out as an extra-credit assignment in her biology class, will cover more than 1,000 posters that will be distributed to schools across Ventura County.

The science fair is presented by the county Superintendent of Schools Office and the Ventura County Economic Development Assn. It is open to students grades 6 to 12.

Alexandra’s poster depicts eight stars that each represents a fair category: botany, chemistry, environment, math or computers, microbiology or medical science, physics, psychology or sociology, and zoology.

The science fair will take place April 25 to 27 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds.
