Guerrero a Minor League Angel

From Staff and Wire Reports

The Angels, after learning that Bo Jackson has declined an invitation to rejoin them, have decided to gamble on another power hitter.

Would you believe . . . Pedro Guerrero?

Guerrero, 38, who has spent the last two seasons playing for Sioux City, Iowa, of the Northern (Independent) League, agreed to a triple-A contract Friday.

Although his offer does not include an invitation to their major league spring-training camp, sources say Guerrero could be used as a replacement player if the strike continues into the spring.

Guerrero, who has been out of the big leagues since 1992, spent 12 years in the Dodger organization before being traded to St. Louis in 1988.

Also Friday, free-agent closer Lee Smith provided a counterproposal to the Angels. Negotiations are continuing.
