Iraq Sanctions

Share

Your article (Nov. 15) on Iraq that included reference to the effects of the sanctions makes me feel that the remarks by U.S. Ambassador Madeleine Albright and of an unnamed “American official” really insult the American people’s intelligence by minimizing the Iraqi people’s immense suffering.

Assigning responsibility is not the issue--leave that to children’s playground quarrels. But, addressing the deadly effects on hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens due to these sanctions is the issue.

These sanctions, as repeatedly noted by American officials, have failed. It must be asked: What are the functions of the sanctions? Are they to punish the regime or to punish the people? Clearly, they are not weakening Saddam Hussein; they are killing defenseless humans. We must remove them posthaste lest we again stand by idly over the holocaust of yet another people facing genocide.
