A man miraculously survived being beaten, stabbed, choked and having a broken golf club shaft jammed through his head, police and hospital officials said Sunday.

Richard Delongchamp was listed in critical condition Sunday at Highland Hospital, where doctors had to surgically remove the shaft, spokesman Marty Boyer said.

“He can thank God he is alive,” Boyer said. “He was extremely lucky the shaft did not hit one of the two main arteries that feed blood to the brain. It appears he had one tremendous stroke of luck, but it’s too soon to tell if he’ll survive this unscathed.”

Police said Delongchamp was attacked for almost two hours by his roommate, Daniel E. Bauer, 29, who eventually called police and was taking a shower to wash off blood when officers arrived.

Bauer has admitted attacking Delongchamp sometime after midnight Thursday after the men got into an argument over marijuana, but then called police because “his roommate told him he wanted to live,” Police Sgt. Mike Clark said.

Bauer started beating Delongchamp in the head with a marijuana pipe and it broke, Clark said.

The assailant got a golf putter he had given Delongchamp and beat him with it, Clark said, and when the club head broke off, he shoved the shaft into Delongchamp’s head behind the ear.

Bauer was booked for investigation of attempted murder.
