Six people were injured Monday night when a pickup truck driver, apparently fleeing a shootout, crashed on a residential street and set off a chain of collisions, police said.

The incident began about 7:35 p.m. when the occupants of the truck and another vehicle exchanged words near the intersection of Garnsey and Cubbon streets, Sgt. Anthony Levatino said. Gunfire erupted from one or both of the vehicles, and the pickup crashed a block away, Levatino said. The truck, which was believed to have passengers in the bed, rolled over and caught fire.

The crash set off five other collisions at the same spot, Levatino said.

Levatino said six people were taken to area hospitals, at least two of them with gunshot wounds. None of the injuries was believed to be life-threatening, he said.
