SIMI VALLEY : Attorney Named to Planning Panel

Simi Valley land-use attorney Richard Kunz, who has had extensive experience working with city governments and politics, will join the Simi Valley Planning Commission in January.

Newly elected Councilman Paul Miller appointed Kunz, who served as Miller’s campaign manager, to the commission Monday night to replace Sherida Simmons. Simmons was appointed by Judy Mikels and served four years on the commission.

The new commission will be seated Jan. 4, city officials said.

Kunz, 34, said he viewed service on the commission as a challenge because of the ever-present conflict between development and land preservation.

“I think the critical thing I will need to do is balance steady, healthy growth against the need to preserve the quality of life we enjoy in Simi Valley,” Kunz said. “That will be difficult, but I feel I’m up to it.”

Miller said he appointed Kunz because they tend to agree on development issues and because of Kunz’s previous experience in municipal government.

Before becoming a lawyer, Kunz worked for the city of Simi Valley as an aide handling several land use and planning issues. He has also served as a legislative deputy and then as a field deputy for two Los Angeles City Council members.

“I think Richard’s experience will serve him well,” Miller said. “He is a logical thinker and I believe he’ll always have the best interests of the citizens at heart.”

In addition to Kunz’s appointment Monday, Mayor Greg Stratton reappointed Commissioner Michael Piper to a two-year term and Councilwoman Sandi Webb reappointed Commissioner Dave McCormick to a four-year term.
