Jim Tassano of Camarillo and John Pate of Santa Barbara came from behind to win the team championship at the 54-hole Saticoy Invitational over the weekend at Saticoy Country Club in Camarillo.

The pair topped a field that included 144 players from seven states. Tassano and Pate, whose brother Steve is a top PGA Tour pro, won on the fifth playoff hole.

Tassano and Pate shot 204 to tie Chuck Reich of Oakland and John Connell of Diablo, Calif. Simi Valley residents Mitch Voges and Al D’Amato were third at 205.

The format was identical to the one used at the Franklin Funds Shark Shootout last month. Teams used scramble, best-ball and alternate-shot formats.

The California Players Tour will hold its fifth and final tournament of the year Monday at Simi Hills Golf Course in Simi Valley.

The event is open to professionals and top amateurs. The California Players is a mini-tour based in Newbury Park.

Cross-Country

Derek Kite placed 32nd and Bryan Dameworth was 87th to lead the Agoura-based Future Track Time Bandits to a 15th place in the USA Track & Field cross-country championships at Blue Lake Park in Portland, Ore., on Saturday.

Kite, a 1990 graduate of Camarillo High and a former standout at Lubbock Christian, timed 30 minutes 52 seconds over the 10,000-meter course.

Dameworth, a three-time State Division I cross-country champion at Agoura High and a senior at Wisconsin, ran 31:43.

High School Football

The Southern Section Division I final between Bishop Amat (13-0) and Mater Dei (13-0) at Anaheim Stadium will be televised live by KCOP-TV Channel 13 at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Last year’s game between Mater Dei and Eisenhower had a 4.5 Neilsen Rating and an eight share. It is the third consecutive year that the Southern Section Division I final has been telecast by KCOP.

College Football
