BREA : Kilcoyne Chosen Brea Olinda President

Bernie P. Kilcoyne this week became president of the Brea Olinda Unified School District.

Kilcoyne takes over for Susie D. Sokol, who led the board during the recent grade-changing scandal in which hundreds of Brea Olinda High School students’ grades were illegally altered.

“We hope (the scandal) is behind us,” Kilcoyne said. He said his top priority will be to replace the principal at the high school, do periodic checks on the high school’s transcript recording practices and focus on ways to improve counseling services for students.

Kilcoyne, who was board president in 1990, has served on the board for seven years and was unanimously selected to be the new president. He was appointed in 1987 and won election and reelection in 1988 and 1992.

Trustee Barbara R. Paxton, who won reelection in November, was chosen vice president and Todd Spitzer was named clerk.

Also, new board members Kenneth A. Kegel, Teresa Hampson and Carol L. Norum were sworn into office.

Lynn Daucher, Frank Davies and Leonard MacKain stepped down. They did not seek another term.

The three former board members were hailed by the board as dedicated public servants with great integrity.
