LAUGHLIN, Nev. — Three men were killed Wednesday afternoon when a crane being lowered from an unfinished hotel tower broke loose and fell 28 stories to the parking lot, dragging a second crane with it, authorities said.
When the accident occurred, construction was winding down on a high-rise addition to the Riverside Resort hotel and casino in this Colorado River gaming outpost near the borders of California, Arizona and Nevada.
A 320-foot free-standing crane was lowering another crane from the top of the hotel tower when “down they came,” said Robert Leinbach, spokesman for the Clark County Fire Department. “The free-standing crane killed the three people. The top portion of the other crane is now embedded in the parking lot.”
Two of the men were in separate cars when they were struck; the third was walking in the parking lot.
