From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The federal judge who accepted former Associate Atty. Gen. Webster L. Hubbell’s guilty plea in the Whitewater investigation stepped down from the case, citing his close relationship with President Clinton. U.S. District Judge William R. Wilson Jr. said in Little Rock that he was confident he could have been fair and impartial in sentencing Hubbell, but he questioned the appearance of his handling Hubbell’s case. Wilson noted both he and Hubbell were Clinton appointees and personal friends of Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
