Gallegly Criticizes Clinton Bosnia Offer

Rep. Elton Gallegly spoke out Friday against President Clinton’s offer to send thousands of U.S. ground troops to Bosnia-Herzegovina to help evacuate the U.N. peacekeeping force there.

The Simi Valley Republican, who sits on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Clinton has shown a troubling willingness to dispatch U.S. troops to hot spots around the world.

“The crisis in Bosnia is something that none of us can accept,” Gallegly said in a statement. “But this conflict simply does not meet the threshold that must be met before we put American lives in harm’s way.”

Gallegly also called for an end to the arms embargo against the Bosnian Muslims and said any American intervention there should occur by air.

“If we’re looking to provide that kind of support, we should do so by air--not by putting young Americans in a very hostile and volatile situation and entrusting their safety to foreign commanders,” he said.
