Prop. 187 ‘Flu’ Would Get Attention

Share

What impact on the local economy would result if up to 25% of the population stayed home from work one day? Or didn’t buy anything for a single day?

That’s exactly the goal of a nonviolent demonstration being called for on Monday, when the Latino communities of Orange County, Montebello and other areas are mounting a “187 Flu Brownout.”

This grass-roots effort by native-born and immigrant groups seeks to call attention to the contribution of “suspects” under the litigation-shrouded Proposition 187.

The move has gained encouragement far beyond the Latino community, with labor, civic and business, black and Asian groups supporting it.

On Monday, who will wash our cars, prepare our restaurant meals, clean our offices and hospitals, maintain the nuts and bolts of Orange County’s tourist industry?

Perhaps such a grass-roots effort by a few working, taxpaying consumers is what’s needed to show their contribution to the community at-large.
