COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gonzales Shoots Cypress to Victory, 86-74

Cypress made 13 three-pointers, including seven by Gil Gonzales, as the Chargers beat Mt. San Jacinto, 86-74, in the third-place game of the Riverside tournament Saturday.

Gonzales, a freshman from Orange High, made four three-pointers in the second half. He was nine of 16 from the field, including seven of 12 on three-point tries.

His play helped offset the performance of Mt. San Jacinto’s Lamony Riley.

Riley, a sophomore forward, scored 43 points, including making nine three-pointers. He had 25 points in the second half.

Mt. San Jacinto (9-5) was within three, 73-70, with 3 minutes 35 seconds left but Cypress (10-3) went on a 7-0 run to lead, 80-70, with 1:47 left.

Jeff Cummins (15 points) made two driving layups during the run. Cummins and Gonzales made the all-tournament team. Jeff Rutter made four three-pointers and finished with 14 for Cypress.

“That was a great win for us,” Cypress Coach Paul Bottiaux said. “We beat a quality team and a sensational player.”

In another Riverside tournament game:

Irvine Valley 73, Citrus 63--Irvine Valley led by as many as 27 points (62-35 with 8:12 left) before Citrus rallied to make it close against the Lasers’ reserves.

Josh Porter of Irvine Valley finished with 23 points and was selected to the all-tournament team.

Jeremy Garrett added 14 for Irvine Valley, which plays its first game in its new campus gym at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Palomar.
