GROZNY, Russia — Chechen Information Minister Movladi Udugov said Sunday that 40 Russian troops and six armored personnel carriers had been captured on Chechnya’s eastern border.
Udugov told reporters that the soldiers and equipment were captured on the border with the neighboring region of Dagestan late Sunday. Russian troops moved into Chechnya on Sunday to end the breakaway southern Russian region’s drive for independence.
The Itar-Tass news agency said the Russian forces were reported to be moving toward Grozny in three thrusts from the east, west and northwest.
The agency said the Russian forces had reached the village of Tolstoy-Yurt, only about 10 miles across mountains from Grozny.
