SANTA ANA : Students’ Reward Packs a Punch

Students at a local elementary school watched in awe Monday as young martial artists demonstrated punches, fighting techniques and smashed wooden slabs with bare feet.
About 190 fifth- and first-grade students at Greenville Fundamental School watched the tae kwon do demonstration as part of their reward for raising money for the campus’ Drug Abuse Resistance Education program. Students at the school raised $360, more than any other campus in the district, Principal Melanie Champion said.
During the performance, several youngsters from a local martial arts studio offered demonstrations of fighting prowess that culminated in an exhibition of board-smashing punches and kicks.
“The children really enjoyed it. Even though they weren’t doing something hands-on, they were participating by seeing something live and not seeing it on TV,” Champion said.
Also during the morning assembly, students were treated to a puppet show by DARE officer and ventriloquist John Reed, who sang songs about the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
School officials also awarded a bike to Jonathon Distor, a first-grade student who raised $110 on his own. Jonathon raised more money than any other student at Greenville.
Money raised will be used to support DARE programs districtwide, Champion said.
