Sulphur Springs District Appoints Board Member

A computer salesman has been appointed to replace a Sulphur Springs Union School District board member who resigned last month.

Steven Sturgeon, a 14-year resident of the area, was selected from nine candidates who applied for the opening left by the resignation of Gary DeRevere. The Board of Trustees announced his appointment late Friday after interviewing candidates for several hours.

DeRevere was elected to the board last year, despite withdrawing from the race one month before the election. He accepted the position after three weeks of deliberating, but resigned Nov. 14, saying his job as an electrical contractor kept him from giving enough attention to his position on the board.

Sturgeon owns a business in the Valencia Industrial Center that distributes software and other computer supplies, district Supt. Robert Nolet said. The new board member has two children at Sulphur Springs Elementary School and has been involved in numerous school activities, including serving as president of an advisory council to the principal of the school.

He will be formally seated at the board’s meeting Wednesday. His appointment will become permanent unless a petition calling for an election is filed with the Los Angeles County superintendent of schools within 30 days, Nolet said.
