World IN BRIEF : MOROCCO : Appeals for Unity at Islamic Summit
A summit of the 52-member Organization of the Islamic Conference opened with appeals for Muslims to change their image, work against extremists and rescue the Bosnian Muslims. At the opening session in King Hassan II’s Moorish palace in Casablanca, two influential heads of state--Hassan and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak--lamented the damage to Islam’s reputation done by intolerant militants. The summit is expected to make a strong statement on Bosnia, probably with a hint that Muslim states might defy a U.N. ban on arms to the mainly Muslim Bosnian government.
