THOUSAND OAKS : Editor of Newspaper Says He’ll Resign

In the second major management shake-up at Ventura County Newspapers in a week, Terry Greenberg, editor of the Thousand Oaks Star and News Chronicle, on Wednesday announced his resignation.

Greenberg, who has directed the Thousand Oaks paper for nearly four years, will step down Dec. 23. He will take a job the following week as managing editor of the San Mateo Times, a mid-size daily newspaper with about 45 editorial employees.

“I’m outta here,” Greenberg said.

Greenberg’s surprise announcement came just one week after John R. Irby abruptly resigned from his position as editor of the Ventura County newspaper group, which is owned by the Ohio-based Scripps Howard chain.

Greenberg said his decision to leave the Thousand Oaks Star had “absolutely nothing” to do with Irby’s departure. He added that he has been negotiating with the San Mateo Times for weeks.

“I was just interested in doing what was best for my family,” Greenberg said. “This was too good to pass up.”

Greenberg’s resignation is the latest in several changes to hit the Thousand Oaks Star and News Chronicle. The paper recently added the name “Star” to its masthead and has merged resources with other papers in the Ventura County newspaper group.

In recent years, the Audit Bureau of Circulation has reported a steady loss of readers for the newspaper. The bureau’s September report showed daily circulation at 20,753, a drop of about 370 from the previous year.

Along with the Thousand Oaks paper, Ventura County Newspapers publishes the Ventura County Star and two zoned editions called the Oxnard Star and the Camarillo Star. It also publishes the Simi Valley Star and Enterprise, and the weekly Moorpark News-Mirror.
