The pipe bomb that killed a New Jersey advertising executive listed a return addressee of “H.C. Wickel,” and the FBI on Wednesday pleaded for the public’s help in identifying the name.

The typed return label showed Wickel in the Department of Economics at San Francisco State University.

But no one by that name has ever taught or been enrolled at the school, said Daniel Hagberg, chief postal inspector in San Francisco, and the Unabomb Task Force asked for calls from anyone with information about the name.

“That’s where this case is going to be solved--through public involvement,” said Jim Freeman, head of the FBI’s San Francisco office.

The bomber has killed two people and injured 22 others in 15 bombings since 1978. The two bombs in 1993 were mailed in Sacramento and had Sacramento State University listed as the return address.

Paul Snabel, head of the local Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, said laboratory analysis of the bomb that killed Thomas J. Mosser on Saturday revealed that it was about the size of two videotapes stacked together.
