Helena Enize Humann; Actress Won Praise for “Lonesome Dove”

Helena Enize Humann, 52, an actress who drew praise for her role as the bossy Peach in the 1989 television miniseries “Lonesome Dove.” More recently she was seen as Mother Superior in the comedy movie “Problem Child.” Ms. Humann got her start in films playing the town tart, Jimmy Sue, in the 1971 movie “The Last Picture Show.” She also appeared in numerous commercials and more than a dozen TV and film productions including “Tender Mercies,” and the award-winning PBS show, “Who Built This Place?” In the original CBS “Lonesome Dove,” Ms. Humann portrayed a feisty widow who was the sister-in-law of Sheriff July Johnson. Peach badgered the Arkansas lawman into going after her husband’s killer. Onstage, she worked with many big names in show business including Vincent Price, Mercedes McCambridge and Herschel Bernardi, but she said her favorite was Van Johnson, with whom she appeared in several theatrical productions including “Send Me No Flowers,” and 872 performances of “Boeing! Boeing!” In University Park, Tex. on Tuesday of what was described only as a long illness.
