A Los Angeles man was convicted of second-degree murder Tuesday in the death of his infant daughter, who he claimed was killed in retaliation for his testimony in a gang murder case.

Anthony Bullock, 21, slammed down his fist and lowered his head when the jury’s verdict was read. Superior Court Judge Mary Ann Murphy scheduled sentencing for Jan. 31. Bullock faces a maximum of 15 years to life.

His 3-month-old daughter, Shantez, was killed Oct. 30, 1993. The baby suffered severe head injuries and may have been suffocated, Deputy Medical Examiner Eugene Carpenter testified during the trial. He said the baby’s body showed signs of previous abuse.

A police report said Bullock told investigators that out of fear and anxiety, he had accidentally slammed her with considerable force into a wall. But during the trial, he testified that gang members had killed her.
