South County : Training Program for Literacy Tutors

Share

You don’t have to be an English major to sign up as a tutor for the South Coast Literacy Council.

Anyone with a command of English will be accepted to instruct people from a wide variety of countries.

Knowledge of a foreign language is not required to take an 18-hour course, which starts Jan. 5. After graduation, tutors will teach speaking, reading and writing to small groups of one to three adults. There are 15 locations in South County.

The training program will take place on six consecutive Thursdays from 7 to 10 p.m. at 31 W. Yale Loop in Irvine. Training is free, but prospective tutors are asked to pay $25 for their learning materials.

South Coast tutor Mary FitzGerald said she has grown to love the job after volunteering as a tutor for the past eight years.

“I just see the response we get from our students, and I just want to provide more tutors, because the need is never-ending,” she said.

The group is part of a national organization called Laubach Literacy Action, based in Syracuse, N.Y. The South Coast Literacy Council covers the entire South County area and Irvine.
