COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cal Stays Unbeaten With Victory Over Cincinnati

No. 24 California has played two ranked teams in the last week, but the Golden Bears are still undefeated and off to their best start in 27 years.

K.J. Roberts sparked a second-half rally and Cal (6-0) pulled away from No. 13 Cincinnati, 89-76, Wednesday night at Cincinnati.

Last Saturday, Cal beat then-No. 11 Minnesota.

Roberts’ layup put California ahead to stay, 64-63, with 8:29 to play. He also made two free throws and drove the court for a layup that pushed the lead to 76-66 with five minutes to play.

Cincinnati (7-3) never got closer than seven points the rest of the game.

Cal, shooting only 61% from the free-throw line, had trouble in that department again against Cincinnati, making only 29 of 49.

Monty Buckley led California with 22 points, Roberts added 16 and Jelani Gardner 14.

No. 3 Arkansas 97, Florida A&M; 57--Corliss Williamson scored 23 points in 23 minutes to lead the Razorbacks (7-1) at Fayetteville, Ark.

Williamson, who made nine of 11 shots from the field, had eight points during a 21-4 run that put Arkansas ahead, 73-41, with 12:50 to play.

The Rattlers are 2-5.

Jacksonville 68, No. 8 Florida 67--Kip Stone scored 24 points, nine in the final four minutes, to lead Jacksonville at Gainesville, Fla.

Jacksonville (5-2) led most of the game despite shooting only 39% from the free-throw line and turning the ball over 21 times.

Andrew DeClercq finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds to lead Florida (5-2).

Texas Southern 71, No. 16 Minnesota 50--Kevin Granger scored 29 points for Texas Southern and Minnesota shot only 29% from the field at Minneapolis.

The Golden Gophers (6-3) lost their third in a row.

Reginald Whittaker added 15 points for Texas Southern (7-2), which won its fourth consecutive game.
