ADIEU, BLUE & GOLD? It isn’t official...

ADIEU, BLUE & GOLD? It isn’t official yet, of course, but local fans wonder: Is today’s game against Washington the Los Angeles Rams’ last home game at Anaheim Stadium? . . . When the Rams debuted at the Big A against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7, 1980, attendance was 64,892--and it stayed in that range the whole year. The last time the Rams drew 60,000 fans for three of eight home games in a year was in 1989--their last winning season (11-5).

FULL SLATE: How many current Rams were on the team that first year here? Only one: tackle Jackie Slater, who finishes his 19th season today. No other player was ever a Ram that long. . . . Only one other player has spent as many seasons with the same team in the National Football League: Jim Marshall, for 19 years a Minnesota Viking (1961-79).

LEGENDARY: The first Rams of Anaheim in 1980 were coming off a January, 1980, Super Bowl appearance, and again made the playoffs with an 11-5 record. Their quarterback? Vince Ferragamo, who is still active in many community causes here. If you wonder whether Ferragamo can still throw the ball, he’s playing in the “Legends” non-tackle football game preceding next month’s Super Bowl in Miami. . . . Other former NFL players from here playing in that event: Santa Ana’s Efren Herrera and John Cappelletti of Irvine.

END OF A PROMISE? The Rams and the city of Anaheim have exchanged feuding words this year, convincing the Rams they may have a better future--and be more welcome--elsewhere, say, in St. Louis. . . . But their late owner, Carroll Rosenbloom, sang a different song when he moved the Rams in just before he died and wife Georgia took over. . . . Said he about Anaheim then: “They have so much to offer. . . . I know it’s a great place (Anaheim Stadium) and the plan they have to improve it is fabulous.”
