LOVE IS HELL by Matt Groening (Pantheon: $9; unpaginated). This newly expanded anthology marks the 10th anniversary of Groening’s delectably outrageous comic strip, “Life in Hell.” Although Groening has never been a great draftsman, these early cartoons reveal how much his drawing has improved over the years. He was always wonderfully keen observer, with an ear for the mindless psychobabble that hangs over L.A. like intellectual smog. He’s equally unkind to both genders, noting such unfortunately familiar types of couples as “I’m With Stupid x 2,” “Mr. and Ms. Boredom” and “Sourballs vs. the World.”
