Pacific Announces Summer Series

Edith Chen, who shared first-place honors with Michael Kieren Harvey in the inaugural Ivo Pogorelich International Solo Piano Competition in Pasadena last year, and American Ballet Theatre principals Susan Jaffe and Robert Hill will be among those participating in the Pacific Symphony’s eighth summer concert series at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre.

The five-part series, announced Tuesday, will begin July 1 with a pops program and will close Sept. 9 with a Tchaikovsky program. Both will include fireworks.

All the concerts will begin at 8 p.m. and subscriptions will go on sale in March at prices ranging from $90 to $230. Tickets to individual concerts will be $12 to $48 and will go on sale June 1. Information: (714) 755-5799.

The season:

* July 1: Edward Cumming, conductor; John Novacek, piano; singers to be announced: Music by Gershwin, Sousa, Leonard Bernstein and Richard Rodgers.

* July 22: Carl St.Clair, conductor; Edith Chen, piano: Sibelius’ “Finlandia”; Grieg’s Piano Concerto; excerpts from Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

* Aug. 5: St.Clair, conductor; Stephen Prutsman, piano: Mozart’s Symphonies No. 34 and 35 and Piano Concerto No. 24.

* Aug. 19: Gisele Ben-Dor, conductor; Christopher Taylor, piano: Beethoven’s “Leonore” Overture No. 3 and Piano Concerto No. 4; three dances from Falla’s “The Three Cornered Hat”; Suite from Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier.”

* Sept. 9: Jack Everly, conductor; Brian Ganz, piano; Susan Jaffe and Robert Hill, ballet dancers: Tchaikovsky program, including an overture to be announced; Piano Concerto No. 1; the White Swan and Black Swan pas de deux from “Swan Lake”; “1812” Overture.
