Tiny Vermont Firm Awarded $25.5 Million Royalty: A U.S. District Court magistrate in Burlington, Vt., set the award to compensate Vermont Microsystems Inc. for software pirating. VMI, which has 10 employees, had sued Autodesk Inc. of San Rafael, Calif., alleging that secrets purloined by a former VMI employee enabled Autodesk to produce certain computer-aided design software. Peter Reed, president of VMI, called the judgment “very conservative” and said he was disappointed that the court did not order Autodesk to stop selling products based on the VMI technology. Autodesk issued a statement denying any wrongdoing and saying it intends to appeal the judgment.
