Martin Marietta Corp. to Settle Federal False-Claims Suit: The company will pay almost $5.9 million to settle a lawsuit charging that its radar division, under earlier ownership of General Electric Co., made improper payments to win an Egyptian government contract. In the suit, the Justice Department and a GE whistle-blower charged that GE improperly used U.S. government foreign military aid money to pay for an Egyptian middleman’s influence in the awarding of a contract to supply Egypt with radar equipment. The payments first drew notice in April, 1992, when GE reported allegations of wrongdoing to the Pentagon under a voluntary disclosure program. Martin Marietta became involved when it purchased GE’s radar division in April, 1993.
