Orange County Almanac

Before suburban housing tracts and strip malls filled the gaps between central cities, the intersections of major streets were lined with general stores, gas stations and specialty stores.

One of Orange County’s most famous crossroads was at Main Street and Chapman Avenue. The intersection was known as Orana because it was halfway between downtown Santa Ana and downtown Orange.

Before the suburban explosion of the 1950s and ‘60s, the crossing was a popular destination for residents who wanted a meal or gasoline without driving all the way into town. For years, Orana was home to a stand that sold refreshing orange juice slush drinks.
