COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Stanford Upsets No. 19 Wisconsin

Brevin Knight scored 26 points and Dion Cross had 19 as unranked Stanford remained unbeaten by defeating 19th-ranked Wisconsin, 95-78, Tuesday night at Palo Alto.

Stanford (8-0) made 33 of 42 shots; Wisconsin made 14 of 21. The Cardinal also outshot Wisconsin (6-2) from the field, 52% to 46%.

The Cardinal backcourt of Knight and Cross did most of the damage. They were constantly on the move, often penetrating Wisconsin’s defense for layups. Knight also had nine assists.

Tim Young added a career-high 16 points and Andy Poppink had 15 points and nine rebounds for Stanford, which registered its second consecutive upset of a top-25 team. Last week, the Cardinal defeated then-No. 22 Virginia, 64-60.

Iowa 81, No. 7 Duke 71--Jess Settles returned from a three-game absence because of a back injury to score 28 points in leading the Hawkeyes (9-1) over the Blue Devils (6-2) in the first round of the Rainbow Classic at Honolulu.

Settles, a sophomore forward, scored seven points and had an assist in a 13-5 run that gave Iowa a 76-65 lead with 2:53 to play.

Duke got back within 76-71 on consecutive three-point baskets by freshman Trajan Langdon, but Iowa made five of six free throws in the final 43 seconds.

No. 5 Kentucky 116, Marshall 75--Jeff Sheppard scored 19 of his career-high 21 points and made five three-point shots in the first half to lead the Wildcats (6-1) over the Thundering Herd (6-2) at Lexington, Ky.

No. 8 Connecticut 71, Illinois 56--Doron Sheffer scored 17 points, all in the second half, and Brian Fair scored 16 to lead the Huskies (6-0) over the Illini (8-3) at Hartford, Conn.

No. 9 Maryland 96, La Salle 80--Reserve Mario Lucas scored a career-high 18 points and sparked a second-half surge that carried the Terrapins (9-2) over the Explorers (5-2) at College Park, Md.

No. 21 Iowa State 96, Chicago State 47--Fred Hoiberg and Loren Meyer each scored 18 points as the Cyclones (9-1) romped over the Cougars (1-6) at Ames, Iowa.

No. 25 St. John’s 81, Manhattan 70--Charles Minlend scored 22 points to lead the Red Storm (7-0) over the Jaspers (8-1) in the first round of the ECAC Holiday Festival at New York.
