Pentagon Endorses Lockheed-Martin Merger: Saying defense mergers are “both inevitable and necessary” because of defense spending cuts, Deputy Defense Secretary John M. Deutch said the $10-billion marriage of Lockheed Corp. and Martin Marietta Corp. should be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. In a letter to FTC chief Janet D. Steiger, Deutch said the deal would not give Lockheed-Martin unfair market concentrations, even in the satellite market, where Calabasas-based Lockheed and Martin Marietta are both big players.
